She’nyah O’Flynn, a 12-year-old African American girl from Covert, Michigan, was tragically shot and killed on June 14, 2018, while visiting her father in Chicago, Illinois. She’nyah had been spending her summers in Chicago since she was four years old, making the city a second home for her. On the night of her death, She’nyah was returning from a relative's graduation party in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
As she exited a car, holding her 1-year-old cousin, gunfire erupted, and She’nyah was struck in the neck by a stray bullet. Despite being rushed to Stroger Hospital, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The 36-year-old man accompanying her was also shot in the leg but survived.
The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. in the 4200 block of West Wilcox Street. Witnesses reported seeing two males shooting near the scene, but it appeared that neither She’nyah nor the man she was with were the intended targets. The family initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks, only realizing the severity of the situation when She’nyah was hit. Her family, devastated by the loss, described her as a smart, fun-loving girl who enjoyed hip-hop, dance, soccer, and excelled in school.
In the aftermath of She’nyah’s death, there have been no arrests or suspects identified. The case remains unsolved, with the Cook County Crime Stoppers offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Despite the passage of time, She’nyah’s family continues to seek justice, urging anyone with information to come forward. The community has also rallied around the family, with local activists and residents calling for an end to the senseless violence that claimed the life of an innocent child.
