Mashell Rena Appleton, a 59-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on July 15, 2018, in Chicago, Illinois. On that fateful morning, Mashell was on her way to a convention of Jehovah's Witnesses in Romeoville. She was accompanied by two friends, a 71-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, when an attempted carjacking occurred in the 900 block of North Kedvale.
