Austin Rogers, a 15-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on June 15, 2019, in a drive-by shooting in Chicago, IL. Austin, a freshman at Simeon Career Academy, was walking home with friends around 8 p.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood when a black Nissan emerged from an alley and its occupants opened fire. Austin attempted to flee but was struck in the back by multiple bullets. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed that Austin died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Austin's family described him as a dedicated student and aspiring basketball player who dreamed of joining the NBA and helping the Chicago Bulls win another championship. He was known for his quiet demeanor, focusing on school, basketball, and his summer job. His stepfather, Charles Smith, expressed frustration and sorrow over the senseless violence, emphasizing the constant danger in their neighborhood and the need for community cooperation to prevent further tragedies.
The investigation into Austin's murder was conducted by Area Central detectives. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests were made immediately following the incident. The family held a march in Austin's honor, during which they reportedly spotted a person they suspected of being involved in the shooting. This individual allegedly grinned and flashed a pistol, further deepening the family's anguish and highlighting the challenges faced by the community in seeking justice.
