On June 18, 2024, 7-year-old Jai'Mani Amir Rivera was fatally shot in a random act of gun violence on the West Side of Chicago. Jai'Mani had just left his apartment at the Oakley Square Apartments and was walking to his grandmother's residence next door when he was struck in the chest by a stray bullet. Responding officers provided aid and transported him in their squad car to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting occurred around 3 p.m.
on Tuesday, with police recovering 13 rifle casings from the scene. The firearm used, believed to be an assault rifle, has not been recovered. Video evidence and an anonymous tip played crucial roles in identifying the suspect. Footage showed the 16-year-old offender approaching on foot, stopping, and opening fire before fleeing the scene.
The 16-year-old suspect, who remains unnamed due to his juvenile status, was arrested on Thursday, less than 48 hours after the shooting, at his residence in the 1800 block of West Monroe Street. He was taken into custody by members of the Chicago Police Department and the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force. At the time of his arrest, an unrelated stolen weapon was recovered, but it was not the weapon used in the shooting.
The suspect has been charged with multiple felonies, including one count of first-degree murder and one count of personally discharging a firearm that caused the death of the victim. He also faces charges related to an active warrant for failing to appear in court on an unrelated robbery charge. The case will automatically be transferred to adult court, and the suspect will be tried as an adult.
Police have emphasized that Jai'Mani was not the intended target of the shooting, and no confirmed motive for the incident has been determined. "We can't give you a confirmed motive for why this happened. There is no justification or explanation that would make it any better, but this is the senselessness that we're talking about," said Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti.
The community and local leaders have expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the incident, with demands for peace and an end to gun violence in Chicago. Jai'Mani's death marked him as at least the 127th child to be shot in Chicago this year, highlighting the ongoing issue of senseless gun violence in the city.
