Luis Amaya, a 36-year-old Hispanic male from Waukegan, Illinois, tragically lost his life on September 4, 2021, due to multiple gunshot wounds. The incident occurred in the 400 block of Belvedere Road, where Amaya was found with severe injuries. Despite being rushed to Vista Medical Center East, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The shooting also left another man, a 40-year-old from Waukegan, injured but he survived the attack.
The investigation revealed that the suspect, Alejandro Lopez, a 19-year-old male from Waukegan, had an ongoing dispute with Luis Amaya. This conflict escalated into a violent confrontation that resulted in the fatal shooting. Lopez was identified as the shooter who targeted both Amaya and the other victim before fleeing the scene in a Saturn Vue. Several hours later, Lopez was involved in another fatal shooting in Evanston, Illinois, where he and other suspects entered a home and killed an Evanston man.
Law enforcement officials were able to apprehend Lopez after a brief chase, during which he attempted to evade capture. He was found with firearms and gloves in his vehicle, which linked him to the crimes. Lopez was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder for the Waukegan shooting, and he faced additional charges for the Evanston homicide. The bond for his arrest warrant was set at $5 million, and he was held in Cook County Jail before being transferred to Lake County for further legal proceedings.
The case remains under investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Waukegan Police Department. The authorities have not found any connection between the two shootings, despite the suspect's involvement in both incidents.
