Leobardo Diaz, a 28-year-old man from Waukegan, Illinois, was found fatally shot inside a vehicle on the evening of January 26, 2025. Authorities responded to the 1900 block of West Greenwood Avenue following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Diaz suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity and conducted an autopsy, which revealed that he had died from a gunshot wound to the back.
Later that same evening, police were alerted to another shooting incident just a few blocks away, in the 1700 block of West Greenwood Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene to find the body of 31-year-old Fredi Aquilar Carrasco, also from Waukegan, lying in the yard of a residence. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Investigators determined that Aquilar Carrasco had been inside the vehicle with Diaz at the time of the shooting. Witnesses reported that the group had been driving around in search of cocaine when Aquilar Carrasco unexpectedly fired a shot into the front driver’s seat, striking Diaz. There was no prior argument or confrontation between the individuals, leading authorities to believe the shooting may have been accidental.
Following the shooting, Aquilar Carrasco fled the scene on foot before ultimately taking his own life nearby. The two other passengers in the vehicle were questioned by police but were released pending further developments in the investigation. Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, but no additional suspects have been identified at this time.
