In the pre-dawn quiet of April 9, 2022, in Decatur, Illinois, 32 year old Stonee O. Adams, a Black male, was found shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 100 block of South Dipper Lane.
Officers had rushed to the scene after a shots-fired call around 1:45 a.m. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Macon County coroner, Michael Day, determined the 32 year old male died from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso, a stark conclusion that matched the violence of the scene.
The hours after the shooting moved quickly. Detectives began piecing together what happened in the parking lot, and two days later a 19 year old, Deonte M. Drake, was taken into custody.
The teenager was booked on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the killing of Stonee O. Adams, and he was held at the Macon County Jail as the case transitioned from sudden tragedy to an unfolding prosecution.
The case did not end with the arrest. In subsequent court proceedings, a Macon County jury found Drake guilty of murder and of using a gun to carry out the crime, and he was sentenced to 55 years in prison, a punishment that reflected both the loss of a 32 year old man's life and the brutality described in the coroner's findings.
