On July 8, 2024, John O. Staley, a 63-year-old resident of Decatur, Illinois, was found deceased at a residence in the 1300 block of N. Monroe Street. The Decatur Police Department responded to the scene following a report of a battery, where they discovered Staley's body. The coroner's examination revealed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, although initial observations also noted suspected bruising to the facial area and an apparent gunshot wound to the lower body.
The investigation led by the Decatur Police Department involved executing a search warrant at a nearby residence in the 1400 block of N. Monroe Street. As a result of this investigation, a 14-year-old male was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder. The juvenile suspect, who was already on aftercare (parole) through the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, is currently being detained at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center.
