On July 8, 2024, John O. Staley, a 63-year-old resident of Decatur, Illinois, was found deceased at a residence in the 1300 block of N. Monroe Street. The Decatur Police Department responded to the scene following a report of a battery, where they discovered Staley's body. The coroner's examination revealed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, although initial observations also noted suspected bruising to the facial area and an apparent gunshot wound to the lower body.
