Myesha Jackson, an 18-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life in a drive-by shooting on April 11, 2022, in Chicago's Canaryville neighborhood. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. when Myesha was driving a 2002 black Saturn with a 20-year-old man as her passenger. As they were traveling near the 700 block of West Root Street, a red 2014 Nissan Altima approached them, and an occupant from the vehicle opened fire.
Myesha suffered a gunshot wound to her body and was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The 20-year-old man, who was also struck by gunfire, was taken to the same hospital in critical condition.
The shooting caused Myesha's vehicle to crash into a nearby building. The chaotic scene was captured on Facebook Live by the service group Ex-Cons for Community and Social Change (ECCSC), which works to prevent violence. Members of ECCSC administered CPR and first aid to Myesha before paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, Myesha could not be saved. Her mother, Baiyina Atkins, expressed her profound grief and disbelief, describing the loss as unimaginable.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Myesha Jackson's death. The Chicago Police Department continues to investigate the incident, but no suspects have been identified or taken into custody. The community and Myesha's family are left seeking justice and answers for the senseless act of violence that claimed the young woman's life.
