In the quiet town of Ray City, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded on the night of February 11, 1976, forever marking the community. On what was meant to be his last shift with the Ray City Police Department, 29-year-old Chief of Police James Edward 'Ed' Giddens was tragically killed. He had already submitted his resignation, looking forward to a future that was violently cut short.
The night took a dark turn when Chief Giddens, a man who had served with both the Lowndes County Sheriff's
Department and the Ray City Police for a year, conducted a seemingly routine traffic stop on a speeding vehicle. Unbeknownst to him, the car held three individuals who had just committed an armed robbery in the nearby town of Adel. The situation escalated rapidly as the suspects abducted Chief Giddens.
After driving around, the assailants devised a cruel plan. They led Chief Giddens to a river, telling him he would be set free if he swam away, giving them time to escape. As he followed their instructions and began to swim, one of the men shot him in the back with his own service weapon. The gunman then entered the water and shot him several more times, ensuring the young chief would not survive.
The three suspects were eventually apprehended for their heinous crime. The man who pulled the trigger was executed for the murder of Chief Giddens on May 18, 1989. A second suspect involved in the abduction and killing died in prison in 1978. Chief Giddens was survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters, who were left to mourn the sudden and senseless loss of a dedicated lawman and family man.
