In the summer of 1980, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short on the streets of Atlanta. Sergeant James E. Richardson, Jr., a respected 10-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, was working undercover on July 19th. His shift took a fatal turn at the intersection of McDaniel and Peters Streets.
While driving an unmarked vehicle, Sergeant Richardson witnessed two men in another car harassing a female gas station
attendant. He promptly intervened, pulling the vehicle over. After speaking with the driver who had exited the car, Sergeant Richardson returned to his own vehicle to run a license check. It was in this moment of routine police work that the passenger of the stopped car emerged and opened fire, fatally wounding the sergeant. The brazen act was witnessed by patrons of a nearby restaurant.
The investigation that followed revealed a deeper layer of criminality. The vehicle the assailants were driving had been stolen from a couple they had previously abducted and robbed. Fortunately, the couple had managed to escape, though not before shots were fired at them. The shooter, whose identity was uncovered during the subsequent investigation, was eventually apprehended.
The man responsible for Sergeant Richardson's murder was brought to justice. Following a trial where evidence and witness testimony, including that of a homeless man who overheard the final moments of the sergeant's life, were presented, the suspect was convicted of the crime. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Sergeant James E. Richardson, Jr. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the family of the fallen officer, who was survived by his wife and daughter, and to a city that mourned the loss of one of its protectors.
