In a tragic turn of events that cut short a promising young life, Rodricous Gates Jr., a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on a Sunday night in August 2017. The incident occurred at the Hampton Downs Apartments on Mt. Zion Boulevard in Morrow, a community in the metro Atlanta area. Gates, a former standout quarterback for Mundy's Mill High School, was found face down in a parking lot of the complex, having succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting
initially faced challenges, with Clayton County police releasing details to the public in the hopes of generating new leads. It was determined that Gates had been involved in a dispute with an unknown individual behind one of the apartment buildings, which is where the shooting is believed to have taken place. After being shot, Gates ran to the front of another building, where he collapsed and died. The motive for the argument that led to the fatal encounter was not immediately clear to investigators.
A break in the case came when police questioned a woman who was with a man at the scene of the crime. She provided a false name for her companion, which hindered the investigation. After further efforts, law enforcement identified the man as 26-year-old Marcus Fraser. As authorities searched for Fraser, they discovered that he had turned himself in to authorities in New York on an unrelated outstanding warrant. Warrants were then obtained for Fraser's arrest on multiple charges, including malice murder, aggravated assault, felony murder, criminal attempt to distribute marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The woman who initially provided false information to the police, identified as Shantavier Willis, also faced legal consequences for her actions. An arrest warrant was issued for her on charges of making false statements. Authorities reported that Willis had indicated she would turn herself in, but had not yet done so.
