In the waning hours of 1990, a dedicated public servant, 26-year-old Officer Shirley Denise Winston, lost her life in a tragic turn of events while on duty in Columbus, Georgia. A four-year veteran of the Columbus Police Department, she was responding to a call on December 31st that would ultimately be her last. The incident unfolded at the intersection of Linden Point and Poplar Street, where her partner was engaged in a struggle with a suspect.
