In the winter of 2023, a shooting at a Motel 6 in Columbus, Georgia, claimed the life of 50-year-old Tonya Michelle Carter. The incident, which occurred on the evening of February 18th, also resulted in the immediate deaths of her husband, Michael Carter Sr., 54, and their son, Michael Carter Jr., 19. Both men were found with gunshot wounds inside their motel room and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Tonya Carter, who was also shot during the violent encounter, fought for her life for
two weeks before succumbing to her injuries on March 4th. Another victim, a 4-year-old child who was also in the room at the time of the shooting, sustained injuries but fortunately survived. The child was transported to a children's hospital in Atlanta and was later released.
The investigation into the triple homicide led authorities to identify 19-year-old Jerimiah Walker as the primary suspect. The Columbus Police Department issued warrants for his arrest on three counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Walker was considered armed and dangerous, prompting a multi-state search.
In April 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service, acting on information that Walker had fled to Tennessee, successfully located and apprehended him in Memphis. He was taken into custody without incident and awaited extradition back to Georgia to face the charges against him.
