A young man’s life was cut short in a burst of violence that shook a Newnan, Georgia community. Gregory Marquel Anderson, a 27-year-old male, was a father, a poet, and an aspiring musician known for his love of drawing and writing. His journey, however, came to an abrupt and tragic end on the evening of Tuesday, March 25, 2014, on Hill Street. An altercation spiraled into a fatal shooting, leaving two men dead and a community in mourning.
On that fateful evening, at approximately 6:45
p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the air. When Newnan police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a grim tableau. One man lay dead in the street, while another was gravely wounded. The second victim, later identified as 23-year-old Darian Vershon Darelle Person, was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The man found deceased at the scene was Gregory Marquel Anderson. The two victims were cousins.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a suspect: 23-year-old Kamikie Nechez Wilkins, also known as 'Chez.' In a strange turn of events, Wilkins himself had sought medical treatment at a local hospital for injuries he sustained during the altercation. Investigators believe he may have been shot by one of the men he is accused of killing. Following surgery at Atlanta Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, Wilkins was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon, March 26, 2014. He was subsequently charged with two counts of felony murder in connection with the deaths of Gregory Anderson and Darian Person. Upon his release from the hospital, authorities planned to transport him to the Coweta County jail.
