In the late hours of a Friday night in Newnan, Georgia, the life of Dustin Scott “Dusty” Parrott, a 32-year-old Caucasian male from nearby Tyrone, was brought to an abrupt and violent end. On February 17, 2023, police responded to a call about a person shot on Cliff Circle around 10:55 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Parrott with a gunshot wound to his chest. First responders rendered aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and family remembered him as a caring and giving person with a heart of gold, whose smile and laughter could light up any room.
The investigation that followed revealed the incident was the result of a botched drug deal. Parrott, along with two other men, had traveled to Newnan with the intention of selling marijuana. Their plans went awry when they were approached by an armed individual intending to rob them. A struggle ensued when the assailant attempted to take a firearm that Parrott possessed. When Parrott refused to let go of his weapon, he was fatally shot. The investigation into his death was a collaborative effort between the Newnan Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, leading to several arrests.
Authorities first took 20-year-old Derrious Daniel and a 15-year-old, both from Newnan, into custody in connection with the murder. The ongoing investigation led to further arrests the following month when two more teenagers, 17-year-old Makale Eugene Williams and 17-year-old William Perry, were also charged in Parrott’s death. The culmination of the legal process came in May 2024, when a Coweta County jury convicted Derrious Bernard Daniel, then 22, on multiple charges including felony murder, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. For his role in the killing of Dustin Parrott, Daniel was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
