In the fading daylight of a Tuesday evening in Newnan, Georgia, the life of 23-year-old Darian Vershon Darelle Person was tragically cut short. On March 25, 2014, gunshots shattered the peace on Hill Street, and when the chaos subsided, Person and his cousin, 31-year-old Gregory Marquel Anderson, were found suffering from fatal wounds. Emergency services responded to the scene around 6:45 p.m., where they discovered one of the men deceased in the street.
Person was transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly pointed to a single suspect: 23-year-old Kamikie Nechez 'Chez' Wilkins. In a turn of events, Wilkins himself had sought medical treatment for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at a local hospital before being transferred to Atlanta Medical Center. It was there that authorities, acting on tips, located and apprehended him the following afternoon. Investigators believe Wilkins sustained his injuries during the altercation with Person and Anderson.
Following his arrest, Kamikie Nechez Wilkins was charged with two counts of felony murder in connection with the deaths of Darian Person and Gregory Anderson. The community, shaken by the violence, held a prayer vigil to call for peace. The families of the two men were left to mourn their sudden and devastating loss, remembering Person as a quiet and low-key individual.
