In the late evening of a Saturday in Savannah, Georgia, the life of 17-year-old Wayne Edwards was tragically cut short. On August 16, 2014, Edwards was behind the wheel of a car on the 1200 block of Elliott Street in the Carver Heights neighborhood. With music playing and two girls in the back seat, he had pulled over to give a friend a ride to a party. It was then that a confrontation unfolded. Another teenager, with whom Edwards had a tense exchange a week prior, approached the vehicle.
Following a verbal dispute, the individual raised a handgun and fired five shots into the car. Edwards was struck by a single bullet in the back. He was rushed to Memorial University Medical Center, but the wound proved fatal due to rapid blood loss.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified 18-year-old Jo'Andre Robbins as the primary suspect. A search for Robbins ensued, with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department asking for the public's assistance in locating him. The efforts of a multi-agency taskforce, which included the Southeast Regional Fugitive Taskforce and members of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, led to his capture. On March 5, 2015, Robbins was found at a residence on Betty Drive and taken into custody.
Following his arrest, the legal process moved forward. Jo'Andre Robbins was charged with the murder of Wayne Edwards. During the trial, his defense argued that he acted in fear, believing Edwards was reaching for a weapon. A gun belonging to Edwards was later found by police in his girlfriend's purse. Despite this, the jury convicted Robbins of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the shooting. In addition to Robbins, another man, Michael Thompson, was arrested in Augusta in connection with the case and was charged as a party to the crime of murder.
