On the night of October 26, 2023, 19-year-old Shaliyah Collins, an African American female, finished her shift at work in Savannah, Georgia, and accepted a ride from someone she knew, her boyfriend's stepfather, Derek Maurice Johnson. Johnson was accompanied by his wife, who was Shaliyah's boyfriend's mother. Shortly after 11:00 PM, a situation unfolded inside the vehicle that prompted a terrified Shaliyah to exit the car and flee down the Truman Parkway.
