In the summer of 2017, the life of 26-year-old Brittani Brown was cut short in a burst of violence that echoed a deeper, more complex story of crime and retribution in Savannah, Georgia. On June 6, police were called to a residence in the 600 block of West 42nd Street, where they found Ms. Brown and a man, Tony Stevens, suffering from gunshot wounds. Brittani Brown succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while Stevens was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The shooting occurred just one day after Brown and Stevens had moved into the new residence.
The investigation into the double shooting quickly led to a suspect. Less than a week later, on June 12, the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of 21-year-old Ihrieon Brown. He was charged with murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and giving false statements in connection with the incident. This arrest, however, was just one piece of a larger, more unsettling puzzle that began to unfold.
Investigators and prosecutors would later reveal that Brittani Brown's murder was not a random act of violence. Her death was linked to the disappearance and murder of her boyfriend, 28-year-old Jamison Lemons, who had vanished a month prior in May 2017. Lemons was last seen leaving the Savannah home he shared with Brown and their friend, Tony Stevens. In June 2017, his burned remains were discovered in Effingham County.
During the trial of Ihrieon Brown, prosecutors presented a narrative of a 'cold-hearted, cold-blooded revenge killing.' They alleged that Ihrieon Brown, who they claimed had gang affiliations, targeted Brittani Brown because she was suspected of having knowledge about what happened to Jamison 'No Mercy' Lemon, who was identified as a fellow gang member. It was suggested that because she did not cooperate with the gang's attempts to find out what happened to Lemons, she was silenced. In 2019, Ihrieon Brown was convicted in Chatham County for the murder of Brittani Brown. The case of Jamison Lemons also saw a conviction, with Justin Jammison found guilty of his murder in Effingham County in 2022.
