On November 5, 2023, 22-year-old U.S. Park Police officer Jesse Brown Hernandez was fatally shot in an apartment in McLean, Virginia. The incident occurred around 12:20 a.m. in the 1700 block of Old Meadow Road, where Hernandez was with three others, including two fellow off-duty U.S. Park Police officers. Among them was 25-year-old Alexander Roy, who, while attempting to "dry fire" a firearm he believed to be unloaded, unintentionally discharged the weapon, striking Hernandez in the upper body.
