In the spring of 2021, a vibrant young life was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. Tamia Marluv Green, a 21-year-old African American woman, was fatally shot on the evening of March 22, 2021. Known for her radiant smile and joyful spirit, Tamia's death sent shockwaves through her community. She was born on December 13, 1999, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and had graduated from Beach High School in Savannah in 2019.
At the time of her death, she was an employee of Federal Express with aspirations of becoming a truck driver.
The events leading to Tamia's death unfolded on Worth Street, where she was found with life-threatening injuries. Reports indicate that she was attempting to intervene and de-escalate an altercation between neighbors when she was struck by gunfire. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, her injuries proved to be fatal. Her courageous and selfless act in an attempt to bring peace to a volatile situation ultimately cost her her life.
In the days that followed, the Savannah Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 21-year-old Chalia Greene, who was not related to the victim. On March 29, 2021, Chalia Greene turned herself in to the authorities. She was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Tamia Marluv Green. The arrest marked a significant development in the case, bringing a measure of hope for justice to Tamia's grieving family and friends. The community closely followed the legal proceedings, seeking closure for the senseless loss of a young woman who was cherished for her love of life, her family, and her playful nature with her beloved dogs, Skylar and Charlie.
