In the early hours of a July morning in Savannah, Georgia, the life of 18-year-old Mercedes Contreras was tragically cut short. Responding to a call around 12:30 a.m. on July 7, 2022, Savannah Police officers arrived at the 100 block of Shellbark Way to find Contreras suffering from gunshot wounds. She was immediately transported to Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Mercedes Contreras succumbed to her injuries later that evening.
Investigators quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence and began interviewing persons of interest who were present at the scene. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continued as authorities worked to piece together the events of that fatal morning.
Within a couple of weeks, the investigation led to an arrest. On July 18, 2022, 22-year-old Kavon Giles was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Giles was subsequently booked into the Chatham County jail. He faced charges of involuntary manslaughter and pointing a gun at another, bringing a measure of resolution to the case, though the loss of a young life remains a somber reality for her community.
