In the pre-dawn hours of July 22, 2020, the quiet of the Battery Point subdivision on Whitemarsh Island in Savannah, Georgia, was shattered by a fatal altercation. Inside a residence on Forestay Court, a dispute between two acquaintances escalated, leaving 34-year-old Samantha Courtney Sams, an African American woman, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Chatham County Police responded to the scene at approximately 4 a.m. to discover the tragic outcome of the encounter.
