In the late morning of May 8, 2022, a domestic dispute in a residence on East 33rd Street in Savannah, Georgia, turned fatal, leaving a 57-year-old African American woman, Vernita Johnson, dead from a gunshot wound. Savannah Police officers responded to a call about the disturbance at approximately 10:35 a.m. and upon their arrival, they discovered Ms. Johnson with fatal injuries. The circumstances of her death were immediately deemed suspicious, prompting a homicide investigation.
