In the summer of 2022, the life of 28-year-old Madalyn Coulter, a white female, was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. On July 12th, concerns grew when Madalyn, a U.S. Army veteran and a sales representative for Blue Force Gear, uncharacteristically took a personal day from work without notifying her employer. This concern would soon turn to devastation.
Her body was later discovered in her red Toyota Highlander, parked in the lot of a DoubleTree Hotel near the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The investigation into Madalyn's death quickly uncovered a grim and heartbreaking series of events. It was determined to be a murder-suicide orchestrated by her former colleague, 41-year-old Zachary Scalf, a white male. The two had previously worked together at Nine Line Apparel and were both U.S. Army veterans. Hours before Madalyn's body was found, Scalf was discovered deceased in his own vehicle from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His car was parked at the Nine Line Apparel facility on Fort Argyle Road.
Evidence pieced together by the Savannah Police Department and the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport Police Department painted a dark picture of Scalf's final hours. Shortly after shooting Madalyn, he posted a video to his social media accounts. In this final message, he spoke of his personal struggles with mental health, alluding to the irreversible decisions he had just made. This, along with other evidence, suggested a premeditated act of violence.
The tragedy sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among their former colleagues and the veteran community. Blue Force Gear, where Madalyn was a cherished employee, released a statement mourning the loss of a beloved teammate, mother, and friend, highlighting her continued service to the military community through her work.
