On a summer evening in Decatur, Georgia, the life of Kevin Antonio 'Chucky' Barnes, a 50-year-old African American male, was tragically cut short. On August 16, 2014, on Quincy Lane, Barnes was fatally shot, leaving a community in mourning and a family devastated. The incident prompted an investigation by the DeKalb County Police Department, who treated the case as a homicide.
In the weeks that followed, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Squad worked to identify a person of
interest in connection with the shooting. Their investigation led them to name Demetrius Eugene Carter as the primary suspect. A warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest, and authorities sought assistance from the public in locating him. Crime Stoppers of Atlanta even offered a financial reward for information that would lead to Carter's apprehension, underscoring the urgency of the case.
The search for the suspect came to an end on Friday, September 5, 2014. Demetrius Eugene Carter was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop in the neighboring Newton County. At the time of his arrest, Carter was a passenger in the vehicle. The driver was not implicated in the shooting. Following his capture, Carter was handed over to the DeKalb County authorities to face legal proceedings related to the death of Kevin Barnes.
