In the early morning hours of November 7, 2015, in Waycross, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Black female Shanique Bellamy was tragically cut short. Bellamy, who was six months pregnant, was fatally shot inside her home on Owens Street. The violence of that night also extended to her two young children, ages one and three, who were found with gunshot wounds. First responders pronounced Bellamy dead at the scene, while her children were rushed to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
The discovery was made after Bellamy's sister, who was in the home, heard a loud noise followed by the children's cries. Upon entering the room, she found her sister deceased. The incident sent shockwaves through the quiet community, with neighbors expressing their disbelief at such a violent crime occurring in their midst.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect, 30-year-old Clinton Lee Davis Jr., who was described as Bellamy's boyfriend. He was apprehended later that same day at an apartment complex in St. Marys, Georgia, without incident. A police report indicated that Davis was the father of one of the two children he was accused of shooting. Warrants were issued for his arrest on charges of murder, feticide, and aggravated assault.
In the days following the shooting, more details emerged about the suspect. Family members of Bellamy told reporters that Davis was a U.S. Army veteran who they believed suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after witnessing a traumatic event during his service. However, some neighbors also alleged that there was a history of abusive behavior from Davis towards Bellamy. Davis was held without bond following his arrest.
