In the early morning hours of February 7, 2020, a tragic event unfolded in the parking lot of the Clayton Homes facility in Waycross, Georgia, culminating in the death of 41-year-old Virginia Nicole Hill, an African American woman. The incident, which was determined to be a murder-suicide, also resulted in the death of her 44-year-old husband, Laurence Hill Jr.
Reports indicate that the couple was engaged in a domestic dispute in the parking lot of the commercial warehouse where Laurence Hill Jr. was an employee. The argument escalated horrifically when gunfire erupted. Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic scramble as employees fled in panic. Laurence Hill Jr. shot his wife outside the factory before he went inside the building and turned the gun on himself.
Law enforcement, including the Ware County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to initial reports of an active shooter. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of Virginia and Laurence Hill. The GBI took charge of the investigation, and autopsies were conducted to confirm the causes of death. The investigation concluded that no other individuals were involved in the incident.
Family members remembered Virginia Nicole Hill as a loving and caring person who would do anything for others. The community was left in a state of shock and mourning following the violent end to the couple's dispute. As the perpetrator was also deceased, there were no arrests or subsequent legal proceedings in connection with Virginia Hill's death.
