In what should have been a simple task of moving belongings from a former residence, a long-standing neighborhood dispute in Hiram, Georgia, escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter for 52-year-old Jeffery Scott Adams. On July 5, 2016, Adams, a man described by friends and family as a loving husband and father who was always ready to help others, was shot and killed by his neighbor, 65-year-old William Arnett. The incident, which also left Adams' wife, Ann, and her sister, Denise Basnett, injured, was the culmination of years of animosity between the two men.
The Adams family had recently moved from their home on Pine Valley Drive, in part to distance themselves from Arnett, whom neighbors had complained about for years and who was known to law enforcement. On that Tuesday afternoon, Jeff, Ann, and Denise returned to the house to retrieve some of their remaining possessions. It was then that Arnett opened fire, shooting all three. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, Arnett fired at them as well, instigating a standoff that would last for several hours.
As the SWAT team was called in and the neighborhood was evacuated, a tense situation unfolded. Law enforcement eventually used tear gas in an attempt to get Arnett to surrender. Hours later, authorities found Arnett in his backyard, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had a handgun and an AR-15 nearby.
Jeff Adams was transported from the scene but was pronounced deceased at a nearby fire station. His wife and sister-in-law were taken to the hospital for their injuries and were expected to recover. The tragic event left friends and family mourning the loss of a man remembered for his kindness and willingness to lend a hand, his life cut short by a conflict that had simmered for far too long.
