In the early moments of January 13, 2017, the life of 34-year-old Mark Phillips, a Black male, was brought to a violent and tragic end inside his own home in Powder Springs, Georgia. Having just returned with his wife and children, the family walked into an ambush. Assailants, who had been lying in wait within the residence, immediately attacked Phillips in the foyer. The ensuing altercation culminated in Phillips being fatally shot. His family, though present, was physically unharmed in the attack. The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving a grieving family and a case that would quickly go cold.
For more than two years, the investigation into the murder of Mark Phillips yielded no viable leads, leaving his loved ones in a painful state of uncertainty. The Paulding County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation continued to work the case, but progress was elusive. A vigil was held one year after his death, with family members pleading for answers and justice for a man they described as a good person with a smile that could light up a room. A significant breakthrough finally came in August 2019. Through a renewed and exhaustive investigative effort, authorities identified a suspect. Damon Sherod Hamilton, a 31-year-old from Lithonia, Georgia, and a confirmed member of a criminal street gang, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, burglary, and violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. Authorities indicated that they believed Phillips had been targeted and that they anticipated more arrests in the future.
