In the early morning hours of February 15, 2025, the life of 67-year-old Gerald Atkins of Kansas City, Kansas, was tragically cut short in Powder Springs, Georgia. Police responded to a call about a person shot at a residence on Katie Emma Drive at approximately 3:33 a.m. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Mr. Atkins, a male, suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Cobb County Police Department's Major Crimes Unit immediately began an investigation into the homicide. Their work quickly led to the identification of a suspect, 64-year-old Bryon Canady of Powder Springs. Less than 10 hours after the fatal shooting, Canady was taken into custody. He has since been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault in connection with Atkins' death.
According to his arrest warrant, Canady is accused of intentionally shooting Atkins several times. While a motive for the shooting has not been made public, property records indicate that Canady's name was listed as a grantee for the home where the incident occurred in a sale dated April 2011. Canady is currently being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released any information regarding the relationship between Atkins and Canady or what might have led to the violent encounter.
