In the winter of 2016, a heart-wrenching incident in Mableton, Georgia, claimed the life of 14-year-old Destiny McNichols. On Tuesday, December 6th, at the Sierra Forest Apartments on Mableton Parkway, the young female was fatally shot. The person responsible was an 11-year-old boy, a family friend, who accidentally discharged a handgun.
Witnesses at the apartment complex reported hearing a single gunshot and the boy crying out that he had shot her by accident. McNichols was discovered in a breezeway of one of the apartment buildings with a gunshot wound. Emergency responders performed CPR at the scene before she was transported to a local hospital, and then to a children's healthcare facility where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Destiny was a student at Lindley Middle School, where she was remembered as an amazing person with a bright smile.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community mourned the loss of the teenager, holding a candlelight vigil in her memory. The investigation that followed led to charges against both the 11-year-old boy and his stepfather, Jahleel Brown. The boy faced charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct in juvenile court. Brown, the owner of the handgun the boy had found in a bedroom, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.
