In the quiet community of Mableton, Georgia, a domestic dispute escalated into a terrifying and ultimately fatal series of events. It was a Tuesday in early October 2018 when 81-year-old Faye Spruell was tragically killed in her own home. The series of events began when Spruell's granddaughter, Jessica Adams, ended her five-year relationship with her live-in boyfriend, 26-year-old James Martin.
The day before the fatal incident, Martin had reportedly become violent with Adams, prompting Spruell to demand that he leave the home they all shared. Although he initially complied, Martin returned to the residence on Lane Drive the following afternoon. Armed with a gun, he forced his way back into the house where he shot and killed Faye Spruell. Family members believe that Spruell, a loving grandmother, was likely trying to protect her granddaughter and great-granddaughter when she was killed.
After shooting Spruell, Martin took Jessica Adams and her young daughter hostage, barricading them inside a room. The ensuing standoff with law enforcement drew a significant police presence to the normally peaceful neighborhood. As the tense situation unfolded, officers were able to rescue Adams and her daughter. During the rescue, the suspect, James Martin, was shot and killed by police at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, as is standard procedure.
