His death was the result of a fatal shooting that occurred at the Hidden Lake Apartments, where he resided with his wife, Tenita Shoats. The incident unfolded during an altercation between the couple, which escalated to a point where Tenita Shoats, also 45 years old, shot Vernon Shoats Sr. multiple times.
