In the summer of 2021, the life of 18-year-old Marquavious Deshon Wright was cut short by gun violence in Macon, Georgia. On the evening of Wednesday, June 16, 2021, deputies were called to the Majestic Gardens Apartments on Rocky Creek Road, where they discovered a chaotic scene. Wright, a young male, was found deceased inside one of the apartments, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Another teenager, 17-year-old Deonte Hunt, was also found at the location with a gunshot wound to his leg; his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed Bibb County Sheriff's Office investigators toward a young suspect. Through leads and information gathered in the days following the shooting, authorities identified 14-year-old Shamar Smith as being involved in the incident. On Monday, June 21, 2021, Smith was located and apprehended at the Bowden Homes apartment complex. After being interviewed by investigators, he was charged as an adult with felony murder.
Further details from the investigation later suggested that the fatal encounter may have been the result of a robbery gone wrong. It was reported that Smith, along with 17-year-old Travis Demontae Gilbert, and the victim, Marquavious Wright, were allegedly attempting to rob an individual. Despite the belief that neither Gilbert nor Smith fired the fatal shot, they both faced murder charges in connection with Wright's death under the circumstances of the alleged crime. The case remained under investigation as authorities continued to piece together the events of that tragic day.
