An afternoon at a Savannah laundromat turned deadly, leaving one man dead and a community in shock. Stanley Owen Anderson, a 62-year-old lifelong resident of Savannah, was at the Suds Laundromat on Largo Drive on the afternoon of November 2, 2017. What began as a routine day tragically ended in violence when a shooting erupted inside the business.
Savannah-Chatham Metro police officers were called to the scene at approximately 3:15 p.m. following reports of the shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. One of the victims was Stanley Owen Anderson. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second victim, a 65-year-old woman, was also shot but her injuries were not life-threatening.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police were able to quickly identify a suspect who was still at the scene. Samuel Hutchinson, who was 70 years old at the time, was taken into custody by the authorities. Following their initial investigation into the incident, law enforcement officials charged Hutchinson with murder in connection with the death of Stanley Owen Anderson. In addition to the murder charge, Hutchinson also faced a charge of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the female victim. The incident marked a grim milestone for the city as the 33rd homicide of 2017.
