Jamari Gerome Edward Batts, a 15-year-old African American male, was with 20-year-old Naivareal Raheem Smith in front of a residential building at the Madison Apartments on West 54th Street. The two were handling a gun when the weapon discharged, striking Jamari in the head.
He was rushed to Memorial University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to the fatal injury.
The investigation that followed the devastating incident led to legal consequences for Naivareal Raheem Smith. He was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. A Chatham County grand jury later indicted Smith on the charge of reckless conduct. The grand jury determined that Smith had acted with a conscious disregard for a substantial and unjustifiable risk when he pointed the firearm at Jamari, causing him bodily harm. However, they did not find sufficient evidence to support the more serious charge of involuntary manslaughter, concluding that there was no intent to kill.
