In the city of Savannah, Georgia, the life of a promising fashion designer was tragically cut short in a violent act that stunned the community. Carey Alphonso Powers Jr., a 35-year-old African American man, was discovered deceased in his apartment on King George Boulevard on the evening of December 16, 2022. An autopsy would later confirm that he had died from a gunshot wound. Powers was a man of creative talent and warm spirit, known for his work in the fashion world and his infectious laughter. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, he had established his own brand, CA-LA-PO by Carey, and had seen his designs worn by various reality TV stars.
The investigation into the untimely death of Carey Powers Jr. moved swiftly, and authorities quickly identified a suspect. Adaunt'e Kimble, a 21-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the discovery of Powers' body. It was revealed that the two men were acquainted with one another, adding a layer of personal connection to the tragic event. Kimble was taken into custody and held at the Chatham County Detention Center, facing a litany of serious charges that included felony murder, felony possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated assault, and felony armed robbery.

It is believed that Kimble may have been intentionally targeting homosexual men in a violent crime spree. Just days before Powers' murder, Kimble was allegedly involved in an armed robbery and carjacking where the victim was met through a dating app. He was also connected to another shooting incident where a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries. These additional alleged crimes painted a portrait of a dangerous individual and a community on edge.
