In the early morning hours of a November Sunday in 2017, what initially appeared to be a single-car accident in Valdosta, Georgia, quickly turned into a double homicide investigation. First responders were dispatched to the 600 block of York Street around 1:11 a.m. on November 12th, where a silver 2004 Buick Lesabre had struck two electrical poles. Inside the vehicle, they discovered the bodies of 26-year-old Clarence Brandon Burnett Jr., an African American male, and 19-year-old Geneva Norwood.
Initially, it was believed the two had succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. However, upon further examination, it was discovered that both Burnett and Norwood had suffered gunshot wounds. The focus of the investigation immediately shifted, and detectives from the Valdosta Police Department's Investigative Bureau, along with crime scene technicians, began processing the scene. The vehicle and the victims were transported to the crime laboratory for autopsy and further analysis.
In the days following the discovery, the Valdosta Police Chief stated that preliminary findings suggested the incident may have been drug-related, based on an examination of the vehicle.
