In the winter of 2018, the life of 12-year-old John 'Lil John' Cooksey Jr., an African American male, was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. On the afternoon of February 3rd, while attending a funeral service at Bonaventure Funeral Home, gunfire erupted, and young John was struck. He was rushed to Memorial Health University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his wounds two days later, on February 5, 2018.
The funeral John was attending was for Ricky Jerome Boyd, a man who had been killed by police the previous month as they were attempting to serve him with a murder warrant. Authorities, however, stated they did not believe the shooting at the funeral home was an act of retaliation connected to the circumstances of Boyd's death. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of a child.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Savannah Police Department's Violent Crimes detectives, along with SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team, moved swiftly. Their investigation led them to a suspect, 15-year-old Deion Micah Pinckney. In the early hours of February 4th, authorities executed arrest warrants and took Pinckney into custody. He was initially charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm by a minor. Following John Cooksey Jr.'s death, the charges against Pinckney were upgraded to murder. He was transported to the Regional Youth Detention Center. The case remains a somber reminder of a young life lost to violence.
