In the evening hours of March 31, 2020, a shooting shattered the quiet of a Savannah, Georgia neighborhood, leaving one man fatally wounded. Dschwane Baldwin, a 25-year-old male, was discovered inside a residence on West 60th Street with a serious gunshot wound. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene around 8:30 p.m., and Baldwin was quickly transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
The Savannah Police Department's Violent Crimes detectives immediately launched a homicide investigation. Investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting, initially stating that they did not believe it was a random act of violence. Their efforts to identify a person of interest soon focused on a teenager.
Within days, the investigation led to a significant development. On April 3, 2020, with the assistance of the SPD's Strategic Investigations Section, authorities apprehended a suspect in connection with Dschwane Baldwin's death. The individual taken into custody was identified as 15-year-old Quintrell Roundtree, Jr. Following his arrest, Roundtree was charged with murder and subsequently transported to the Savannah Area Regional Youth Detention Center.
