In May of 2018, the life of 24-year-old Jason Williams, a student at Georgia State University, was tragically cut short in Decatur, Georgia. Williams had been reported missing by his family after he failed to show up for a new job and they were unable to reach him. His family's concern grew as calls to his phone went directly to voicemail. The devastating truth of his whereabouts would soon come to light.
On the evening of Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Williams was fatally shot at a Citgo gas
station on Columbia Drive. Surveillance footage from the station showed Williams and another man, later identified as 22-year-old Roden Meadows, together inside the convenience store. After they returned to their vehicle, an altercation occurred, and Williams was shot multiple times. He managed to exit the car but collapsed in the parking lot where he was left to die as the vehicle drove away. First responders found him in critical condition but were unable to save him.
The community and his family were left reeling from the senseless act of violence. His family described him as a vibrant individual with an infectious personality who was on the cusp of a bright future, set to graduate from college later that year. They were initially unaware of the tragic events that had unfolded, only learning of his death after filing a missing person's report.
The investigation into Williams' death led authorities to Roden Meadows. Just over a week after the shooting, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit arrested Meadows and charged him with murder. Investigators believe that Williams and Meadows knew each other, though the specific nature of their relationship and the motive for the shooting were not immediately released.
