In a tragic turn of events that unfolded in Rome, Georgia, 30-year-old Crystal Dawn Vega, a mother of five, lost her life in June 2018. Just ten days after giving birth to her fifth child, Vega was found with a gunshot wound to the head in her apartment on West 13th Street. The incident occurred in the presence of two of her young children.
Vega's boyfriend, Nakotah Javez Smith, was identified as a person of interest in the case. A neighbor reported that Smith had knocked on her door, claiming Vega had shot herself, before asking the neighbor to drive Vega to the hospital. Smith then fled and remained at large for two weeks before being apprehended. Investigators found a large pool of blood inside Vega's apartment, and family members reported a history of domestic violence in the couple's relationship. Friends of Vega also stated that she had been planning to leave the abusive relationship.
Following a two-week manhunt, Nakotah Javez Smith was arrested and charged with Vega's murder.
