In the quiet city of Rome, Georgia, the life of 32-year-old Shaina Britt Underwood was abruptly cut short on the night of November 6, 2021. A verbal dispute at a residence on Robin Hood Lane escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving a community in mourning and a family shattered. Underwood, a mother to four children, found herself in a heated argument with 42-year-old Calvin Bernard Crockett Jr. of Acworth, Georgia.
The disagreement reportedly spiraled out of control, culminating in Crockett brandishing a firearm. He is said to have threatened Underwood before ultimately discharging the weapon, inflicting a mortal wound. In the immediate aftermath, Crockett attempted to alter the scene by moving Underwood's body and a bag of marijuana.
Law enforcement swiftly apprehended Calvin Bernard Crockett Jr., and he faced a litany of charges, including murder, aggravated assault, tampering with evidence, and terroristic threats. Additional charges were brought forth for possession of a firearm and marijuana. As the case proceeded to trial, Crockett's defense team built a narrative of a tumultuous and toxic relationship, asserting that he acted in self-defense. In December 2022, a jury delivered its verdict. While acquitting him of malice murder, they found Calvin Bernard Crockett Jr. guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. The convictions also included aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of marijuana. For his role in the tragic death of Shaina Britt Underwood, Crockett was sentenced to a total of 25 years, with the stipulation that 12 of those years must be served in prison.
