In May of 2020, the life of 30-year-old Clarice Truvenia Campbell was tragically cut short in Rome, Georgia. She and her 19-year-old half-sister, Vanita Richardson, were found deceased under the East Rome Bypass bridge over the Etowah River. Their bodies were discovered by Department of Transportation workers on the morning of May 13, 2020. Both women had bags placed over their heads.
The investigation into their deaths led authorities to three suspects: Desmond Brown, Devon Watts, and Christopher Pullen. The motive for the brutal killings was reportedly a misplaced suspicion that the two sisters had stolen Brown's wallet during a party. In an attempt to retrieve the wallet, the men lured Campbell and Richardson into a car. During the drive back to Rome, the women were confronted about the missing wallet. An altercation ensued, and both sisters were shot.
Following the shootings, the men disposed of the bodies by throwing them from the bridge. Investigators were able to piece together the events leading to the women's deaths through eyewitness statements, cell phone data, and forensic analysis. It was later revealed that the wallet in question was found at Brown's home, behind his television.
In November 2023, a jury found Desmond Brown guilty of capital murder for the deaths of Clarice Campbell and Vanita Richardson. The trial, which included testimony from 33 witnesses for the prosecution, concluded with the jury reaching a verdict in just an hour. Brown was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The cases against Devon Watts and Christopher Pullen were also proceeding through the legal system.
