In the heat of a July afternoon in 2019, the life of 17-year-old Gerardo Cabrera-Perez, a Hispanic male, was tragically cut short. On July 19th, at approximately 3:15 p.m., gunfire echoed through the Foxwood Apartments on McElroy Road near the bustling Buford Highway in the Doraville area of Atlanta. Gerardo was discovered near a wooden gazebo, a common area meant for relaxation and community, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head, stomach, and leg.
He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
The senseless act of violence left friends and the community in shock, remembering Gerardo as a cheerful and kind individual who attended Chamblee Charter High School and would often check in on how his friends were doing. The brazen daytime shooting in a residential area, right next to a playground, prompted an immediate and intensive investigation by the DeKalb County Police. Detectives began interviewing witnesses, trying to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter and to identify who the young victim had been with.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect. The day after the shooting, police arrested 19-year-old Carlos Bernal, who was subsequently charged with malice murder in connection with Gerardo's death. While authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting, some reports indicated that the suspect had been seen at the apartment complex three days prior to the incident, openly carrying a gun in what was described as a strange encounter.
