Friends and mentors described her as a beacon of light, a talented writer, and a compassionate soul who was destined for greatness in the world of journalism.
She was an active member of her university community, involved in the student newspaper, a radio show, and was known for her infectious energy and radiant smile.
The Edwards family was well-regarded in the Atlanta, Georgia, community. Her father, Dr. Christopher Edwards, is a prominent orthopedic surgeon, and her mother, Dr. Marsha Edwards, was a successful businesswoman. Marsha’s social media presence painted a picture of a doting mother, frequently posting photos of her children and expressing her pride in their accomplishments. Just hours before the tragedy, a post on her Instagram from a recent trip to Italy with Erin read, 'I’ve had the best summer, first with Chris in Miami, and Erin in Italy. I could not ask for better children.' This public display of affection made the events that followed all the more shocking and difficult to comprehend for those who knew the family.
On the evening of August 21, 2019, police were dispatched to the Edwards' upscale townhouse in Vinings, a suburb of Atlanta, for a wellness check requested by Dr. Christopher Edwards, who was divorced from Marsha. Inside, they made a grim discovery. Erin, her 24-year-old brother, Christopher Edwards II, and their 58-year-old mother, Marsha, were all found deceased from gunshot wounds. The subsequent investigation by the Cobb County Police Department concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide.
An autopsy later revealed the devastating details of the final moments of Erin and her brother's lives. Marsha Edwards had shot her children multiple times before taking her own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erin was found in the same room as her mother, having been shot in the chest and arm. Her brother was found in a different room on another floor of the home.
