In the early morning hours of June 3, 2018, the life of 18-year-old Chloe Cartierra Dowdy was tragically cut short in a southeast Atlanta home. Responding to a call about a shooting at approximately 7:10 a.m. on Bromack Drive, police discovered a grim scene. Inside the residence, they found Chloe, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second victim, 25-year-old Christopher Welch, was found outside the home, also with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The initial investigation suggested that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the victims and a man they were acquainted with, who also resided at the home. Authorities identified the suspect as 62-year-old Rufus Weems. Police believed that Weems opened fire on Chloe and Christopher while they were in a front bedroom of the house before fleeing the scene. The motive for the argument that led to the deadly shooting was not immediately clear.
A manhunt for Rufus Weems ensued, and on Friday, June 8, 2018, he was apprehended by the FBI at an apartment complex in Jonesboro. Weems was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Chloe Dowdy and Christopher Welch. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail and held without bond. Weems waived his initial court appearance, and his case proceeded through the legal system. In January 2024, a Georgia Supreme Court filing indicated that Rufus Weems had been convicted of two counts of malice murder and other charges related to the deaths.
