A promising future was tragically cut short in the early morning hours of July 23, 2016, when 25-year-old Taylor Hayden was killed in Atlanta, Georgia. A recent graduate of Prairie View A&M University, she had just embarked on a new career and was visiting the city from Houston for a weekend getaway with friends.
The group of friends had spent the evening out and were waiting for a ride outside the Anchor Down Grille & Lounge in the Buckhead neighborhood.
Around 5 a.m., a dispute erupted between two separate groups of men in the parking lot, escalating into a shootout. During the exchange of gunfire, Hayden was struck by a stray bullet. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have stated that Hayden was an innocent bystander and not the intended target of the violence.
The investigation into Taylor Hayden's death was immediately hampered by a lack of cooperation from the numerous witnesses present at the scene. Despite the crowded parking lot at the time of the shooting, very few individuals came forward with information for the Atlanta Police Department. Investigators believe the fatal shot may have been fired from a white Cadillac Escalade that was seen leaving the scene after the altercation with occupants of an Audi.
In the years since the shooting, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified, leaving the case unsolved. A reward was offered for any information that could lead to an arrest and conviction, but it has not yielded any breakthroughs. The case is now considered cold, though it remains open. Taylor Hayden's family, including her father and her brother, a Minnesota state senator, have continued to appeal to the public for anyone with information to come forward and help bring justice for Taylor.
